Leading Excellence Maryborough

LEAD Loddon Murray partners with the Victorian Government, Committee for Maryborough, Central Goldfields Shire and Go Goldfields to offer a dynamic leadership development program for residents of Central Goldfields Shire. Leading Excellence Maryborough is an annual program for 50 participants, (30 adults and 20 young people) to master community leadership skills and seek to understand important local issues.

Participants spend 14 program days together, exploring and seeking to understand local issues from the perspective of residents, community groups, business and industry in the Central Goldfields Shire. A key focus of the program is developing leaders who will influence the narrative of the community of Maryborough, instilling pride, confidence and connectedness in community members and the collective identity of the town.

  • Develop participants communication and influencing skills, to help build an empowered and positive narrative about belonging in the Central Goldfields Shire.

Program Structure

Participants are required to attend 5 weekend sessions (one day each) and 8 afternoon/evening workshops. Each program session includes a combination of story-based learning from presenters, workshops to develop skills and opportunities for participants to practice implementing and refining new skills. The program is delivered in a number of locations across the Central Goldfields Shire. Participants must find their own way to program sessions (often held in the CBD in Maryborough) and are encouraged to car pool when travelling to smaller towns.

The program incorporates a mix of learning styles and experiences to challenge mindsets. Leadership theory and skills based content is provided and participants are encouraged to explore their own learning and leadership styles, values and beliefs in a supportive environment.

Community Projects

Participants are encouraged to create or contribute to a community project during their program year to enable them to learn through action. Participants serve on duty teams throughout the project to practice chairing sessions, facilitating activities, evaluation and reflection.

Program Outcomes

Leading Excellence Maryborough is designed to support emerging leaders in the community to take on formal leadership roles including standing in the 2020 Local Government Election, serving on local committees for sporting, social and environmental groups and schools. Graduates of the program will be equipped with the leadership and governance skills and understanding of good governance to make strong contributions to local groups and associations. The program represents excellent value for local employers seeking to foster stronger leadership skills in their staff and that encourage their staff to play an active role in their local community. The Committee for Maryborough plays a very important role, engaging business and industry in supporting the program.
